      <image:title>Our Legacy - John E. Allen Jr.</image:title>
<image:caption>Mr. Allen founded Freedom Theater in a North Philadelphia storefront in 1966 with the support of the Black People's Unity Movement. He left his job as a supervisor with the Sun Oil Company in 1973 to run the theater full time. Mr. Allen was also a performer, teacher, director and writer. He had worked in television and had directed productions for the New York Theater Festival, the Walnut Street Theater and the Philadelphia Company. He studied drama at Hedgerow Theater in Rose Valley, Pa., and the American Education Theater in Washington.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Legacy - ROBERT E. Leslie</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1968, Mr. Leslie joined John E. Allen Jr. to expand a theater group Allen had started two years earlier. They formed the New Freedom Theatre, more commonly known as just the Freedom Theatre. Though Mr. Leslie wrote plays and directed a little, he focused more on the theater's administration and, at one time, served as general manager, said his daughter Gail Leslie, director of operations at New Freedom Theatre. She said her father took great pride in New Freedom's training program, which he developed and oversaw for a period. Mr. Leslie had worked for 20 years as a circulation manager for the Evening Bulletin, supervising drivers and newsstand sales. When he retired in the late 1970s, he devoted all of his time to the theater, Gail Leslie said. "Through many tough times when others might have wavered, Bob fought indefatigably for the theater to pull through," said Derek Hargreaves, president of the New Freedom board. Sandra N. Haughton, executive director of the theater, said Mr. Leslie "insisted that the arts be taken seriously."</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Legacy - Walter Dallas</image:title>
<image:caption>Dallas, a graduate of Morehouse College and the Yale School of Drama, was based in New York when he accepted the invitation to come to Philadelphia in 1983 to create the School of Theatre for the University of the Arts. He got involved with Freedom Theatre and John Allen Jr., Freedom's founding Artistic Director. Under Dallas, Freedom has worked with playwrights and artists including James Baldwin, Denzel Washington, August Wilson, Sonia Sanchez, Grover Washington, Jr. and Glynn Turman.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Legacy - Sandra Haughton</image:title>
<image:caption>Sandra N. Haughton, who served as financial consultant for the debt-plagued Freedom Theatre for years, was then named executive director of the organization, believed to be the nation’s oldest black theater company. Haughton, is Freedom Theatre’s first executive director and the first manager officially in charge of all operations since the departure of artistic director Walter Dallas, who also served as interim managing director. Haughton is a graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a seasoned arts administrator. “We still have a ways to go,” Haughton said. She single handedly eliminated $4 million of our debt, programmed theater and kept the light on at Freedom and inside the hearts of Freedom staff and supporters.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our History - THE LEGACY OF EDWIN FORREST</image:title>
<image:caption>In the early 1800s, Americans flocked to theaters as a source of entertainment and drama. During this time, American actors began to challenge the dominance of British actors and theater. One of these actors, Edwin Forrest of Philadelphia, would become one of the most well-known and popular performers of the first half of the nineteenth century. Edwin Forrest was the first true star of the American theatre. Born on March 9, 1806 in Philadelphia to William and Rebecca Forrest. Edwin was fascinated with the theatre at a very early age and with his older brother William, practiced together before either took the stage. Edwin joined his first theater company at the age of twelve. William a modest actor, became a respected manager in Albany and in Philadelphia. He was the manager of the Arch Street Theatre in Philadelphia, where he died prematurely. In 1820 at the age of fourteen, Forrest made his professional debut at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. Through most of the rest of the 19th century, American actors and other entertainers performed only in theatre, variety and traveling circuses, and members of the profession were not highly respected. During his long and successful career, Edwin Forrest did a great deal to change that perception. In July 1826 Forrest debuted in New York as Othello. His Bowery Theatre performance in November in the same role was so successful that Forrest became the leading attraction for the remainder of the season. The fame of his initial triumph and the power of his performances brought him sold-out houses in city after city. Within two years, and still in his early twenties, Edwin Forrest had become the most highly paid performer in the United States. When he toured in England and throughout Europe, he was the first American to be acclaimed an international star. Both a Shakespearean actor and a supporter of emerging American playwrights, his roles included Spartacus, Macbeth, Hamlet, and Metamora in Metamora; and The Last of the Wampanoags. In the late 1840s and early 1850s, Forrest’s reputation was damaged by a very public and bitter divorce from his wife Catherine as well as a rivalry with the British actor William Macready. The rivalry between the two actors culminated in the Astor Place Riot on May 10, 1849 when supporters of the two actors clashed in a conflict that left at least 20-25 people dead.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Partners - Chanel Holland</image:title>
<image:caption>Chanel Holland is the founder and artistic director of Chocolate Ballerina Company. Chanel is a traditional ballet, modern, jazz, and hip-hop choreographer and pioneer, who devotes her time teaching Vaganova technique to inner-city youth. She’s a lead teaching artist for BalletX’s in-school dance education program, Dance eXchange. At the age of 16, Chanel was accepted into The Alvin Ailey School, a world-class training program for aspiring dancers. She studied at Koresh, The University of the Arts, National Dance Institute NYC, a Wissahickon Dance Academy. Determined to put her knowledge to use, Chanel’s experience extends beyond becoming a Complexions’ Apprentice, member of the Philadelphia Dance Company II, NAACP-ACT-So’s 2011 Gold Medalist, 2010 Choreographer of the Year, and a member of the Sixers Junior Dance Team. Through her time in the dance community, Chanel engages in the opportunity to be an active background dance for various local and international artists. Throughout her creative journey, Chanel didn’t just test out dance, she started as an actress, attending the New Freedom Theatre, performing arts program. Chanel was granted the opportunity to participate in roles with legendary Philadelphia actors Johnnie Hobbs, Jr., Walter Dallas, and many others. She created Chocolate Ballerina Company for change due to the lack of ballet culture in urban communities and performance opportunities to black artists. Building a company out of pain and self-resentment has transpired through the company’s repertory and lives through the passion in the company dancers. Chanel received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ballet from Temple University and Tish School NYU and continues to choreograph and teach artist development experiences.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Partners - freedom theatre mural</image:title>
<image:caption>Mural Arts Philadelphia proposes wall murals for the Freedom Theatre at 1346 N Broad St, Philadelphia, PA. The new mural will serve to celebrate past, present and future of the theatre and surrounding community and will feature the founders and legacy members of the theatre within the artwork. The façade of the building where the murals are being proposed is historical and any alterations must be presented and approved by the Philadelphia Historic Commission. Due to the historic status of the wall, it is not possible to paint or adhere mural cloth directly onto the walls. Historical Commission has initially responded positively to the proposal of creating murals on the two recessed areas identified, provided that the murals were on panels, not on the building itself, and that the panels were mounted in such a way that the building was not harmed. Historic records show that the area on the left was used for a painted sign when the women’s art school occupied the building and the area on the right was previously altered for a door and then later restored back to its original appearance.</image:caption>
